College Collaboration

Since writing the last update, significant changes have been announced relating to the future of Coleg Llandrillo. Of particular interest has been the decision to move to a merger situation with a neighbouring institution – Coleg Meirion Dwyfor.

At this stage following the full support of both Boards a feasibility study is being undertaken to establish the form and prime objectives of a merged institution. A Joint Merger Steering Group has been established involving a small group of Board members and the two College Principals. The current earliest projection for full merger is Easter 2010. Joint Working groups have also been agreed to identify key areas for joint development. Both Colleges are committed to make this initiative work to the best advantage of learners in their respective areas. The merged college with a budget in excess of £43,000,000 will be one of the largest in the UK and will have the critical mass and expertise to make a significant difference to its immediate catchment area. It will also serve to consolidate and protect the levels of post 16 funding in the area as levels of public sector potentially diminish over the coming years.

I have included below some questions & answers that may of interest to you regarding the proposed merger.

Will there be any change of name? No. The names of Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor and Coleg Llandrillo Cymru will be retained and promoted.

Will the learners have the same choice of courses? Yes, and every effort will be made to further develop the curriculum to respond to local economic needs and personal aspirations.

Will the Colleges’ existing sites be affected ? All existing sites will be maintained. The site infrastructure is important to ensure that learners have appropriate access to learning. There is also an intention to invest in the resources of both Colleges

What about a specialised site like Glynllifon? Early discussions have highlighted that Glynllifon has great potential for further development, including the specialist areas of land-based provision, other rural developments and general vocational learning.

What about choice of language of study? The existing choice of language of study will remain and be further enhanced.

Will students need to travel further to study? No, they won’t have to travel any further.

Where will parents be able to discuss matters relating to the student’s progress? At their local, existing College site. This will not change.

Will parents and students notice any changes? They shouldn’t notice any negative ones, no. Going to College should feel pretty much the same as it did before, but with positive developments.

Will local employers notice any changes? Yes, positive changes. Coleg Llandrillo Cymru’s considerable experience in employer engagement will allow Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor to be more responsive to the requirements of local businesses.

What about the staff? Staff from both Colleges will continue to be treated fairly, and their conditions of service will be honoured.

Will staff need to travel more? It is unlikely that support and lecturing staff will need to travel further. It is, however, reasonable to expect managers to be more mobile to support new developments and gain new experiences and opportunities.

How will the College be managed? The three Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor sites will become part of the Llandrillo Group of Colleges. Day to day general management will remain on the existing Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor sites and Coleg Llandrillo Cymru sites.

Will this dilute the Welsh/bilingual ethos at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor? Definitely not. The distinctive bilingual ethos at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor will be retained and strengthened. Policies, procedures and staff will ensure that this is maintained. Coleg Llandrillo Cymru will also benefit from this experience as the College continues to promote a bilingual ethos on its sites.

Will local communities notice any difference? It is not envisaged that there will be any noticeable difference.

How will local opinions be taken onto account? A committee will be established at each site. This committee, made up of local people – including business people – will be chaired by a member of the College governing body and be responsible for ensuring that the College is aware of, and listens, to local opinions. This will be true for all sites in the new organisation.

Coleg Llandrillo Cymru and Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor are important employers in their areas. Will this create any redundancies? There is no intention to enforce compulsory redundancies as part of this process. However, both Colleges cannot rule out changes forced upon them by future funding allocations and/or future changes required to respond to national policy or local needs.

New Health & Care Centre

Coleg Llandrillo Cymru has received substantial Welsh Assembly Government funding to support a new Professional Centre for Training & Development for Health & Care at the Rhos-on-Sea Campus.

Health & Care is a Welsh Assembly Government priority area and the funding will enable the College to further strengthen its partnership with both public and private sector organisations to raise standards of care. The College has developed a comprehensive programme of courses to develop and upskill the workforce in Health & Care, particularly for those working in, or wishing to work in, Care Assistant and Support Staff roles.

The courses, which commence later this month, are the first part of the development of a new curriculum offer which will provide opportunities for those living in the region, whether they are already working within the Health & Care sectors and wish to develop their skills further or whether they wish to train or re-train for a career in Care. The courses offer something for everyone, running from 2 to 70 weeks in length.

Rhyl Sixth Update
Since the last posting, it was announced by the Welsh Assembly Government Minister Jane Hutt that plans to reorganise the sixth forms in Rhyl will go ahead.

The College has already jointly planned a much extended curriculum for September 2009, which was well received by parents and pupils at a sixth form choices event last month.

In 2010, the Rhyl Sixth will move to a custom built, £3.5million centre on the College’s Rhyl Campus. This development, which will receive significant funding from the Welsh Assembly Government, will provide Rhyl Sixth learners with a dedicated centre on a par with the best in Wales. Presently the College is submitting its building plans prior to the formal building approval being granted.

Culinary Award
Coleg Llandrillo Cymru scooped three out of the top five awards at the Welsh International Culinary Championships Awards Dinner, including the ‘Best College’ category. It is the first time the College has won the main award, beating off stiff competition from all the other colleges in Wales and England who competed in the Championships. Coleg Llandrillo Cymru had its best results ever in this year’s Championships, with students winning over 50 awards, including 12 gold medals.

The College also won the ‘Best Open’ and ‘Best Static’ categories. The former was awarded to students Calum Mackay from Penmaenmawr and Lizzie Graham from Colwyn Bay, who won the Afternoon Tea Cook and Serve Competition. The latter award was presented to Kate Hulse from Llandudno for her cross-stitch rose cake.

Conservative Leader Visits Local College – April 2009
I was pleased to welcome the Leader of the Welsh Conservative Party to Coleg Llandrillo Abergele earlier this month. Nick Bourne AM spoke to a range of students about the learning opportunities available in the area. Nick Bourne was joined by his shadow cabinet members Darren Millar AM and Paul Davies AM, as well as William Graham, AM for South Wales East.

Beacon Award – Local Celebration
I was pleased to host earlier this week representatives from the Welsh Assembly Government, local AMs, County Councillors, members of the local business community and Coleg Llandrillo Cymru staff to celebrate the College receiving the prestigious AoC (Association of Colleges) Beacon Award for outstanding contributions to Further Education.

It was a local celebration, following on from the national awards ceremony, which took place at Westminster, London earlier in the year. Coleg Llandrillo Cymru won the Welsh Assembly Government Award for College Engagement with Employers for the work of the Business Point Unit, which establishes, develops and oversees training and development for local SMEs (Small to Medium-sized Enterprises). This is the eighth Association of Colleges (AoC) Beacon Award that the College has been awarded in recent years, which is one of the highest totals throughout all colleges in the UK.

Ers ysgrifennu’r diweddariad diwethaf, mae newidiadau arwyddocaol wedi cael eu cyhoeddi ynghylch dyfodol Coleg Llandrillo. O diddordeb penodol yw’r penderfyniad i symud at safle o gyfuniad gyda sefydliad cyfagos – Coleg Meirion Dwyfor.

Ar hyn o bryd, yn dilyn cefnogaeth lawn gan y ddau Fwrdd, mae astudiaeth dichonolrwydd yn cael eu cynnal i sefydlu’r ffurf a phrif wrthrychau sefydliad cyfuniad.

Mae Grŵp Llywio Cyfuniad ar y Cyd wedi cael ei sefydlu sy’n cynnwys grŵp bach o aelodau’r Bwrdd a dau Brifathro’r Colegau. Y rhagamcaniad cynharaf sydd ar gael yn bresennol ar gyfer cyfuniad llawn yw Pasg 2010. Mae grwpiau gwaith ar y cyd wedi cael eu cytuno er mwyn adnabod meysydd allweddol ar gyfer datblygiad ar y cyd.

Mae’r ddau Goleg yn ymrwymedig i wneud y gwaith arloesol yma er budd dysgwyr yn eu hardaloedd. Y coleg cyfunol, a fydd â chyllideb o tua £43,000,000 fydd un o’r mwyaf yn y DU. A bydd ganddo’r mas critigol ac arbenigedd i wneud gwahaniaeth arwyddocaol i’r dalgylch cyfagos. Bydd hefyd yn gwasanaethu i gyfnerthu ac amddiffyn lefelau o arian ôl-16 yn yr ardal wrth i lefelau o sector gyhoeddus brinhau o bosibl dros y blynyddoedd sydd i ddod.
Rwyf wedi cynnwys cwestiynau ac atebion a allai fod o ddiddordeb i chi ynghylch y cyfuniad arfaethedig isod.

A fydd yr enw’n newid? Na. Bydd enwau Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor a Choleg Llandrillo Cymru yn cael eu cadw a’u hyrwyddo.

A fydd dysgwyr yn cael yr un dewis o gyrsiau? Byddant, a caiff pob ymdrech ei wneud i ddatblygu’r cwricwlwm yn bellach er mwyn ymateb i anghenion economaidd lleol a dyheadau personol.

A fydd safleoedd presennol y Colegau’n cael eu heffeithio? Caiff pob safle presennol eu cadw. Mae’r rhwydwaith safle yn bwysig i sicrhau fod gan ddysgwyr fynediad priodol i ddysgu. Mae yna hefyd fwriad i fuddsoddi yn adnoddau’r ddau Goleg.

Beth am safleoedd arbenigol fel Glynllifon? Mae trafodaeth cynnar wedi fod gan Glynllifon botensial gwych ar gyfer datblygiad yn y dyfodol, gan gynnwys ardaloedd arbenigol ar gyfer datblygiad tir, datblygiadau gwledig eraill a dysgu galwedigaethol cyffredin.

Beth am ddewis iaith astudiaeth? Bydd y dewis presennol o iaith astudio yn cael ei gadw a’i fwyhau’n bellach.

A fydd myfyrwyr angen teithio’n bellach i astudio? Na, ni fydd yn rhaid iddynt deithio’n bellach.

A fydd rhieni a myfyrwyr yn gallu trafod materion yn gysylltiedig i gynnydd myfyrwyr?
Ar safle eu Coleg lleol presennol. Ni fydd hyn yn newid.

A fydd rhieni a myfyrwyr yn sylwi ar unrhyw newidiadau? Ni ddylent dylai ar unrhyw rai negyddol, na. Dylai mynd i’r Coleg deimlo’r un fath ag y gwnaeth o’r blaen, ond gyda datblygiadau cadarnhaol.

A fydd cyflogwyr lleol yn sylwi ar unrhyw newidiadau? Byddant, newidiadau cadarnhaol. Bydd profiad sylweddol Coleg Llandrillo Cymru mewn ymrwymiad cyflogwr yn galluogi Coleg Meirion Dwyfor i fod yn fwy ymatebol i ofynion busnesau lleol.

Beth am y staff? Bydd staff o’r ddau Goleg yn parhau i gael eu trin yn deg, a bydd eu amodau gwaith yn cael eu parchu.

A fydd staff angen teithio mwy? Mae’n annhebygol y bydd staff cefnogaeth a darlithio angen teithio’n bellach. Er hynny, mae’n rhesymegol i ddisgwyl i reolwyr fod yn fwy symudol i gefnogi datblygiadau newydd ac ennill profiadau a chyfleoedd newydd.

Sut fydd y Coleg yn cael ei reoli?
Bydd tri safle Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor yn dod yn rhan o Grŵp o Golegau Llandrillo. Bydd rheolaeth dyddiol cyffredinol yn aros ar safleoedd presennol Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor sites a safleoedd Coleg Llandrillo Cymru.

A fydd hyn yn gwanhau ethos Cymraeg/dwyieithog yng Ngholeg Meirion-Dwyfor? Na, yn bendant. Bydd ethos dwyieithog gwahanredol yng Ngholeg Meirion-Dwyfor yn cael ei gadw a’i gryfhau. Bydd polisïau, gweithdrefnau a staff yn sicrhau fod hyn yn cael ei gadw. Bydd Coleg Llandrillo Cymru hefyd yn manteisio o’r profiad yma wrth barhau i hyrwyddo ethos dwyieithrwydd ar ei safleoedd.

A fydd cymunedau lleol yn sylwi ar unrhyw wahaniaeth? Ni ragwelir y bydd yna unrhyw wahaniaeth amlwg.

Sut fydd barn lleol yn cael eu hystyried? Bydd pwyllgor yn cael ei sefydlu ar bob safle. Bydd y pwyllgor yma, yn cynnwys pobl leol – gan gynnwys pobl busnes - yn cael ei gadeirio gan aelod o gorff llywodraethu’r Coleg a bod yn gyfrifol am sicrhau fod y Coleg yn ymwybodol o, ac yn gwrnado ar farn lleol. Bydd hyn yn wir ar gyfer pob safle yn y sefydliad newydd.

Mae Coleg Llandrillo Cymru a Choleg Meirion-Dwyfor yn gyflogwyr pwysig yn yr ardal. A fydd hyn yn creu unrhyw anghyflogaeth? Nid oes yna fwriad i orfodi anghyflogaeth gorfodol fel rhan o’r broses yma. Er hynny, ni all y Colegau ddiystyru newidiadau a orfodir arnynt gan ddyraniadau arian yn y dyfodol a/neu newidiadau sydd eu hangen yn y dyfodol i ymateb i bolisi cenedlaethol neu anghenion lleol.

Canolfan Iechyd a Gofal Newydd

Mae Coleg Llandrillo Cymru wedi derbyn arian sylweddol gan Lywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru i gefnogi Canolfan Proffesiynol ar gyfer Hyfforddiant a Datblygiad Iechyd a Gofal ar Gampws Llandrillo-yn-Rhos. Mae Iechyd a Gofal yn faes o flaenoriaeth i Lywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru a bydd yr arian yn galluogi’r Coleg i gryfhau ei bartneriaeth gyda sefydliadau sector cyhoeddus a phreifat yn bellach er mwyn codi safonau gofalu. Mae’r Coleg wedi datblygu rhaglen cynhwysfawr o gyrsiau i ddatblygu a diweddaru sgiliau’r gweithlu mewn Iechyd a Gofal, yn enwedig i’r rheiny sy’n gweithio yn, neu eisiau gweithio mewn swyddi Cynorthwyydd Gofalu a Staff Cefnogol. Y cyrsiau yma, sy’n dechrau yn hwyrach y mis yma, yw’r rhan gyntaf o ddatblygiad o gynnig cwricwlwm newydd a fydd yn darparu cyfleoedd i’r rheiny sy’n byw yn yr ardal, pa nai eu bod yn gweithio’n barod yn sectorau Iechyd a Gofal ac eisiau datblygu eu sgiliau’n bellach neu os hoffent hyfforddi neu ail hyfforddi ar gyfer gyrfa mewn Gofal. Mae’r cyrsiau’n cynnig rhywbeth i bawb, gan redeg o 2 i 70 wythnos o hyd.

Diweddariad Chweched y Rhyl
Ers y cofnod diwethaf, cyhoeddodd Gweinidog Llywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru Jane Hutt fod cynlluniau i aildrefnu dosbarthiadau chweched yn y Rhyl yn mynd i barhau.
Mae’r Coleg wedi cynllunio cwricwlwm estynedig ar y cyd ar gyfer mis Medi 2009 a dderbyniwyd yn gadarnhaol mewn digwyddiad dewisiadau chweched dosbarth y mis diwethaf.
Yn 2010, bydd Chweched y Rhyl yn symud i adeilad pwrpasol, canolfan £3.5 miliwn ar Gampws y Rhyl. Bydd y datblygiad yma, a fydd yn derbyn arian sylweddol gan Lywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru, yn darparu dysgwyr Chweched y Rhyl gyda chanolfan ymroddedig a fydd gyfwerth â’r gorau yng Nghymru.
Yn bresennol mae’r Coleg yn cyflwyno ei gynlluniau adeiladu er mwyn i’r cymeradwyaeth adeilad ffurfiol gael ei roi.

Gwobr Coginiol
Enillodd Coleg Llandrillo Cymru dri allan o bump gwobr yn Swper Gwobrau Cenedlaethol Rhyngwladol Cymru, gan gynnwys y categori ‘Coleg Gorau’.
Dyma’r tro cyntaf i’r Coleg ennill y brif wobr, gan guro cystadleuaeth galed gan golegau eraill ng Nghymru a Lloegr a gystadlodd yn y Pencampwriaethau. Cafodd Coleg Llandrillo Cymru ei ganlyniadau gorau ym Mhencampwriaethau eleni, gyda’r myfyrwyr yn ennill dros 50 o wobrau, gan gynnwys 12 medel aur.
Enillodd y Coleg gategorïau ‘Agored Gorau’ a ‘Statig Gorau’ hefyd. Cafod y cyntaf ei wobrwyo i fyfyrwyr Calum Mackay o Benmaenmawr a Lizzie Graham o Fae Colwyn, a enillodd Gystadleuaeth Coginio a Gweini Te Prynhawn. Cafodd y dyfarniad diwethaf ei gyflwyno i Kate Hulse o Landudno am ei chacen rhosod pwyth croes. .

Arweinydd y Ceidwadwyr yn Ymweld â Choleg Lleol - Ebrill 2009
Roedd hi’n bleser gen i groesawu Arweinydd Parti Ceidwadol Cymru i Goleg Llandrillo Abergele yn gynharach y mis yma. Siaradodd Nick Bourne AC gydag amrediad o fyfyrwyr am y cyfleoedd dysgu sydd ar gael yn yr ardal.

Gwobr Beacon – Dathliad Lleol
Roedd hi’n bleser gen i groesawu gynrychiolwyr o Lywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru, AC lleol, Cynghorwyr Sir, aelodau o’r gymuned busnes lleol a staff Coleg Llandrillo Cymru yn gynharach yr wythnos yma i ddathlu’r ffaith fod y Coleg yn derbyn Gwobr eacon AoC (Association of Colleges) anrhydeddus am gyfraniadau rhagorol i Addysg Bellach.

Roedd yn ddathliad lleol, yn dilyn seremoni wobrwyo genedlaethol a gynhaliwyd yn San Steffan, Llundain yn gynharach yn y flwyddyn. Enillodd Coleg Llandrillo Cymru Wobr Llywodraeth Cynulliad Cymru Ymrwymiad y Coleg gyda Chyflogwyr am waith Uned Pwynt Busnes, sy’n sefydlu, datblygu a goruchwylio hyfforddiant a datblygiad i BBaCH (Busnes Bach a Chanolig) lleol. Dyma’r wythfed Gwobr Beacon Association of Colleges (AoC) y mae’r Coleg wedi ei ennill dros y blynyddoedd diwethaf, sef un o’r cyfansymiau uchaf ar draws y DU.
